Day 1 of the Summer Academy on Urban Transitions: Heritage, health and sustainability in the smart city

On Monday morning July 9th, the Summer Academy on Urban Transitions kicked off nicely in Depok, West Java. The academy, jointly organized by Universitas Indonesia (Jakarta), Leiden University and Universitas Gadjah Mada (Yogyakarta) is the first multi-annual collaboration between the three institutions.
Opening remarks were delivered by Prof. Dr. Taniawati Supali of Universitas Indonesia, H.E. Ambassador for the Royal Kingdom of the Netherlands Mr. Rob Swartbol and the DG of Resources for Science, Technology and Higher Education, Ali Ghufron Mukti, MD, M.Sc, Ph.D. All stressing the need for a multi-disciplinary approach in tackling the complex problems of urban transitions.
In total, 75 lecturers and researchers from Leiden, UI, UGM and other universities (Brawijaya – Malang and Airlangga – Surabaya) and the Indonesian Institute for Sciences (LIPI) will attend meeting for six consecutive days. The outcome of the academy is multi-fold research proposals to submitted to funding agencies and future academic collaborations between Leiden and Indonesian scholars.
